Site Selection

Quality Christmas tree production begins with proper site selection. Basically, this means matching the tree species to the site that it prefers. For example, Douglas Fir is very susceptible to late spring frosts. Therefore, it should not be planted in valleys, where cold air settles; but on ridge tops where there is good air drainage. Trees like Fraser Fir prefer cooler sites; therefore, they should be planted on north or northeast facing sites, avoiding the hotter south or southwest facing sites. None of the desirable Christmas tree species prefer wet sites!
